APC UPS/Surge Protector Reviews

8 outlets, USB control, phone line protection, Flat wall outlet plug.
Very large, 350VA is sufficient but not good enough for some "hotter" running machines.

This unit is probably more than enough for your average consumer concerned about power outages for their computers. However, I would probably recommend more expensive model, with a longer battery running time for the "power user."

Number of outlets, fax/modem + ethernet protection, visual and audio battery indicators, USB interface, circuit breaker, ParaChute software, $75,000 equipment protection, 3 yr warranty.
Only 200 watts (insufficient for all but the most lightly loaded PC), no COAX (cable) protection, PowerChute software lacks "test" option.

I prefer APC UPS devices over other brands since I believe they use superior batteries (i.e., will last significantly longer). For its limited capacity, this model has a LOT of outlets (8 total, 4 surge only, 4 surge+battery), plus there are two outlets (one of each type) for large A/C adapters. Uses USB interface (some other brands still using serial!). Comes w/ ParaChute Personal Edition software which will automatically and cleanly shutdown your computer when power is lost and battery life is nearly exhausted. Software isn't fancy, but does the job. Only wish it supported a test option. Since it doesn't, you have to pull the power cord to verify the unit is working properly or as expected. 350VA (200W) capacity really isn't sufficient for a modern PC, not unless you have a VERY lightly loaded system. But these devices can be used for a multitude of non-PC purposes (small applicances, digital clocks, portable/wireless phones, fax machines, routers, cable modems, VOIP adapters, USB hubs, external HD enclosures, inkjet printers (NOT laser!), etc.). As far as the $75,000 equipment protection, I've heard both good and bad stories. Since the determination of fault resides solely w/ APC, the odds of a successful claim due to failure of the UPS seem rather remote. For the most part, this offer seems more marketing hype than reality. So don't place too much stock in it (I certainly don't).

loud alarm, enough outlets, status light
loud alarm, short battery life

For some reason, I only lose power during hurricanes (SW Florida) or at random times during the day or night (regardless of weather). The hurricanes, well, you can't do much about that; it's been a real concern to me to be working on something and have the power cycle on the house (literally out of a clear blue sky) and reboot my computer with no warning. Since I've had this, the power's gone out twice that I know of and this little UPS has kept the computer going strong both times. I don't leave the computer on when I'm gone and I'm short a USB, so I can't comment on the software, but I'm glad to have it as an option. If I were to have an extended outage, I would be on hand to shut down the computer safely myself and this would buy me the time to do it. I wouldn't miss hearing the alarm because it's certainly loud. According to the specs on the box, it's only got enough juice to buy me a few minutes, but that's all I hope to need. And like I said, it's enabled me to ride safely through two brief outages already. For the price I paid, I would buy it again, but I would consider spending more to get one with more horsepower (or watts). One helpful feature was the building wiring fault indicator. I was not plugged into a properly grounded outlet and didn't know it before this.

Ability to protect computer, monitor, TV and other various electronic equipment against premature shutdown....
none

I have APC UPS units connected to my PC, monitor, and 2 TV's and have been able to handle power failures in an orderly manner...The combination of battery back-up and surge protection is very useful in my mix of printers and computer, monitor, etc....

+Enough sockets for my needs (4 battery / 4 surge protected)+Ease of setup+USB connections allows status via PowerChute software+Design+Low price
-Not enough battery runtime for my needs

This is the first UPS I have purchased. I haven't tested it yet during a real blackout but it seems like it does the job, allowing me sufficent time to save any important documents or data and safely shutdown my PC.I mainly bought this because the electricity in my house frequently goes off for a brief moment (~1-3 seconds) and comes back on. All my clocks need to be reset, and I'm sure this causes a lof of fragmented data when the PC goes down and up instantly. So far I haven't encountered this problem so I can't comment on its performance. The sofware claims with my PC (dual core, three HDs, 500W PS, 17" LCD) I have less than a minute on battery. This may be enough time for me to shut down but I was hoping to have at least 5 minutes or more.
